When her shared flat was demolished to make way for affordable housing, Paula was left with nowhere to live. When she approached the council for help, they told her they were in a crisis in regards to the number of housing requests they were receiving. They also said that she wouldn’t qualify for affordable housing as she wasn’t earning enough money – £30,000 a year- despite being in a full time job. She said “It felt like nobody was willing to help me.”

With nowhere else to go, she turned to sofa surfing. Eventually, this became sleeping in her car.

In November 2019, however, she approached Ahava Community, after her son let her know about their work, and she was provided with shelter. To try and repay the charity for helping her, she began volunteering for us, and now works in our brilliant Brewery shop!
